Nicholas Butler
Nicolas Murray Butler (2. huhtikuuta 1862 – 7. joulukuuta 1947) oli yhdysvaltalainen rauhanaktivisti, filosofi, diplomaatti, professori, Columbian yliopiston rehtori, Carnegie-säätiön presidentti sekä Nobelin rauhanpalkinnon saaja vuonna 1931.

Nicholas Butler syntyi New Jerseyn osavaltiossa, ja hänen vanhempansa olivat tehtailija Henry Butler ja Mary Murray Butler. Hän opiskeli Columbian yliopistossa, jossa hän sai BA-tutkinnon vuonna 1881 ja maisterin arvon 1883. Jo seuraavana vuonna hän väitteli tohtoriksi. Tämä Butlerin häikäisevästi alkanut akateeminen ura sai Theodore Rooseveltin kutsumaan häntä liikanimellä Nicolas Miraculous[1]. Vuonna 1885 Butler opiskeli Pariisissa ja Berliinissä ja tapasi tällöin myös Rooseveltin ja William Howard Taftin. Saman vuoden loppupuolella Butler liittyi Columbian yliopiston filosofisen osaston henkilökuntaan. Vuodesta 1902 lähtien, 42 vuotta, Butler toimi Columbian yliopiston varsinaisena kanslerina.
Butler oli aktiivinen myös politiikassa. Hän oli vuonna 1912 ehdolla Yhdysvaltain varapresidentiksi William Howard Taftin parina alkuperäisen ehdokkaan James S. Shermanin kuoltua juuri ennen vaaleja, muttei tullut valituksi. Vuoden 1920 vaaleissa Butler tavoitteli itse republikaanisen puolueen ehdokkuutta, muttei tullut valituksi.[1]
