American Idolin yhdeksäs tuotantokausi alkoi Yhdysvalloissa 12. tammikuuta 2010 FOXilla[1] ja Suomessa 30. tammikuuta 2010 Subilla. Kauden päätösjakso esitettiin Yhdysvalloissa 26. toukokuuta 2010.
Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson ja Kara DioGuardi jatkoivat kaikki tuomareina ja Ellen DeGeneres korvasi Paula Abdulin neljäntenä tuomarina.[2] Idol Gives Back palasi myös yhdeksännelle kaudelle ja se pidettiin 21. huhtikuuta 2010 seitsemän parhaan tuloslähetyksessä.[3] American Idolin 4.-7. kausilta tuttua Top 24 -semifinaaliformaattia käytettiin myös tällä kaudella.[4] Kausi oli Simon Cowellin viimeinen tuomarointikausi.[5] Ohjelman juontajana jatkoi Ryan Seacrest. Kilpailun voitti 24-vuotias Lee DeWyze.
Tuomarit [muokkaa]
Kauden alettua, Paula Abdul ei palannut tuomaripaneelin neljänneksi tuomariksi, kerrottuaan elokuussa 2009 jättävänsä sarjan ratkeamattomista sopimussyistä.[6] Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Shania Twain, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris ja Kristin Chenoweth toimivat koelaulujen tähtituomareina jokainen kerrallaan neljännen tuomarin paikalla.[7][8][9][10]
Foxin puheenjohtaja Peter Rice kertoi, ettei koelaulujen jälkeen ole vierailevia tuomareita, vaan neljännen tuomarin paikalle etsittäisiin pysyvä tuomari.[11] 9. syyskuuta 2009 Ellen DeGeneres julkaisi tiedon liittyvänsä American Idol tuomaristoon Hollywood-viikosta eteenpäin.[12]
Pian kuudennen kauden alkamisen jälkeen Simon Cowell kertoi jättävänsä sarjan yhdeksännen kauden jälkeen muiden kiireiden vuoksi.[13]

"Pants on the Ground" [muokkaa]
Atlantan koelauluissa 62-vuotias aktivisti Larry Platt koe-esiintyi ja esitti oman alkuperäiskappaleensa "Pants on the Ground". Kappaleen sanat viittaavat ihmisiin, jotka käyttävät hiphop-tyylisiä vaatteita, muun muassa "roikkuvia" housuja. Hyvin 28 vuoden ikärajan ylittäneenä Platt ei saanut jatkaa kisassa. Koe-esiintymisensä jälkeen Plattin kappaleesta tuli internet-ilmiö, ja useat julkkikset esittivät kappaletta Atlantan koelaulujen jälkeisinä päivinä.
Hollywood-viikko [muokkaa]
Toisena peräkkäisenä vuonna Kodak-teatterissa pidetyn Hollywood-viikon ensimmäinen päivä sisälsi yhteensä 181 kilpailijaa (vaikka American Idolin nettisivuston mukaan vain 172 kilpailijaa esiintyi[21]), jotka esittivät soolon, jossa sai käyttää myös haluamaansa instrumenttia.[22] Jatkoon pääsi 96 kilpailijaa. Seuraavalla kierroksella kilpailijoiden täytyi jakautua ryhmiin ja esiintyä. Hollywood-viikon viimeiselle kierrokselle, joka sisälsi sooloesiintymisen, pääsi jatkamaan 71 kilpailijaa. Jatkoon selvisi 46 kilpailijaa, joille tuomarit kertoivat yksitellen selvisivätkö he 24 parhaan joukkoon.
Ellen DeGeneres esiintyi ensimmäisen kerran neljäntenä tuomarina Hollywood-viikolla (korvaten Paula Abdulin).

Ensimmäiset seitsemän semifinalistia paljastettiin 16. helmikuuta 2010 ja loput seuraavan illan jaksossa.[23]

Semifinaaliformaattia käytettiin kausilla 4-7, sekä tällä kaudella. 12 naista ja 12 miestä esiintyvät viikoittain erillään ohjelmissa ja tuloslähetyksissä kaksi huonointa naista ja miestä putoavat. Semifinaalit sijoittuvat kolmelle viikolle, kunnes naisia ja miehiä oli molempia jäljellä kuusi, jotka muodostivat Top 12.
Tässä vaiheessa sarjaa kauden poistumiskappale oli Will Youngin "Leave Right Now".[24]

Siobhan Magnusin putoaminen kisasta aiheutti kuohuntaa tuomareiden ja sarjan fanien joukossa.[40] Kuohunta vain kasvoi kun selvisi, ettei Facebookissa esillä ollut äänestysnumero ollutkaan oikea Magnusin numero, vaan Aaron Kellyn.[41][42] Eräät kommentaattorit spekuloivat, että puhelinnumeroiden sekaannus johti Magnusin putoamiseen. Magnusin fanit ovat aloittaneet kampanjan tuodakseen Magnusin takaisin kisaan. Esille on tullut myös salaliittoteorioita, ettei Magnus olisikaan ollut vähiten äänestetty, sillä tämä ei ollut ollut kertaakaan kolmen huonoimman joukossa.[43]
