Simon & Garfunkel oli yhdysvaltalainen, Paul Simonin ja Art Garfunkelin muodostama, suuren suosion saavuttanut folk-duo. Se voitti vuonna 1970 vuoden parhaan albumin Grammy-palkinnon. Vuonna 2004 musiikkiaikakauslehti Rolling Stone rankkasi Simon & Garfunkelin sijalle 40 sadan parhaan artistin listalla. Se on myös valittu Rock and Roll Hall of Fameen[1] ja Long Island Music Hall of Fameen (2007).[2]

Ensialkuun kaksikko perusti kouluikäisinä 1950-luvun puolivälissä lauluduon nimeltä Tom & Jerry. Heidän suurin esikuvansa oli The Everly Brothers. Samoissa New Yorkin folk-piireissä liikkui myös uraansa aloitteleva Bob Dylan. Myöhemmin parivaljakko muutti nimensä Simon ja Garfunkeliksi ja akustinen esikoisalbumi Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. julkaistiin vuonna 1964. Se menestyi alkuun huonosti, mutta sen kappaleesta "The Sound of Silence" tuli vähitellen suosittu floridalaisilla radioasemilla. Kun tuottaja Tom Wilson keksi muokata kappaleesta alkuperäistä sähköisemmän version, siitä tuli lopulta syyskuussa 1965 Simon ja Garfunkelin läpimurtokappale. Yhtyeen muita tunnettuja kappaleita ovat muun muassa samannimisen albumin laulu "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Homeward Bound", "The Boxer", vanhasta sävelmästä tehty "El Condor Pasa", englantilaisesta balladista tehty "Scarborough Fair" ja etenkin Dustin Hoffmanin läpimurtoelokuvan Miehuuskoe soundtrackille alun perin tehty "Mrs. Robinson". Lauluduon levytyksissä ykköslaulajana toimi pääsääntöisesti Paul Simon[3], mutta kappaleilla "April Come She Will" (1966), "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" (1966) ja "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (1970) Art Garfunkel laulaa yksinään. Laulussa "Scarborough Fair" (1966) molemmilla on oma osansa, he laulavat eri säkeistöjä päällekkäin.
Duon toiminnan jälkeen [muokkaa]
Duo lopetti toimintansa vuonna 1970, jonka jälkeen molemmat lähtivät soolouralle. Kaksikko on lopettamisen jälkeenkin esiintynyt yhdessä useita kertoja, joista kuuluisin lienee New Yorkin keskuspuiston konsertti vuodelta 1981. Viimeisen yhteisen laulun, "My Little Town", he levyttivät vuonna 1975 ja se päätyi molempien omille levyille. Jäähyväiskonsertti järjestettiin vuonna 2004, jolloin he esiintyivät Old Friends: Live on Stage -nimisellä kiertueella. Vuonna 2009 duo aloitti kuitenkin taas uuden kiertueen ja on esiintynyt myös vuonna 2011.[4]
