Phil Spector

Harvey Phillip ”Phil” Spector (s. 25. joulukuuta 1940 Bronx, New York, Yhdysvallat) on yhdysvaltalainen musiikkituottaja, joka tuli tunnetuksi monien 1960-luvun menestyskappaleiden tuottajana. Hänet muistetaan niin sanotusta "wall of sound" -äänivallista, joka perustui laajoihin instrumentaatioihin sekä useiden tuotantoteknisten ratkaisujen, kuten kaiun käyttöön. Spector oli ensimmäinen levytuottaja, josta tuli ammatissaan supertähti ja joka loi oman tavaramerkkisoundinsa. Muun muassa The Beach Boysin Brian Wilson mainitsee Spectorin suurimmaksi esikuvakseen.

Ura

Spector saavutti ensimmäisen listaykkösen jo 17-vuotiaana tekemällään kappaleella "To Know Him Is To Love Him", jonka hän tuotti ja esitti yhdessä The Teddy Bears -yhtyeensä kanssa. Kappaleen nimen Spector otti isänsä hautakirjoituksesta. Ennen 21-vuotissyntymäpäiväänsä Spector oli ehtinyt perustaa Los Angelesiin oman Philles-levymerkin. Spector menestyi useiden tyttöbändien, kuten The Ronettesin ja The Crystalsin taustavoimana. Muita hänen tuottamiaan artisteja olivat muun muassa Darlene Love, Ike & Tina Turner ja The Righteous Brothers, jonka kanssa syntyi menestyskappale "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'".

Kun Spectorin parhaana työnään pitämä, Ike & Tina Turnerin esittämä "River Deep – Mountain High" epäonnistui myynnillisesti Pohjois-Amerikan markkinoilla 1966, päätti Spector jäädä eläkkeelle vain 25-vuotiaana. Spectorin menestys katkesi, ja hän vetäytyi lähes täysin julkisuudesta elämään erakkoelämää, joka on jatkunut pienin poikkeuksin tähän päivään asti.

1970 Spectoria pyydettiin tuottamaan The Beatlesin viimeiseksi jäänyt studiojulkaisu Let It Be. Itse yhtye ei ollut enää kasassa, ja Spectorin mahtipontinen tuotanto jakoi mielipiteet entisten jäsenten keskuudessa. Beatleista John Lennon ja George Harrison jatkoivat yhteistyötä Spectorin kanssa, joka tuotti heille menestyslevyt, Lennonin Imaginen ja Harrisonin All Things Must Passin. Spector tuotti 1970-1980-luvulla albumeja myös Leonard Cohenille ja Ramonesille.

Vuonna 2009 Spector tuomittiin elinkautiseen vuonna 2003 tehdystä henkirikoksesta. Hän voi päästä ehdonalaiseen vapauteen kärsittyään tuomiosta vähintään 19 vuotta.

Oikeudenkäynti

40-vuotias näyttelijä Lana Clarkson (s. 5. huhtikuuta 1962) löytyi kuolleena Spectorin kotoa Kaliforniasta 3. helmikuuta 2003. Clarksonia oli ammuttu suuhun. Teosta epäiltiin Spectoria, joka kiisti epäilyn ja väitti, että Clarkson teki itsemurhan. Juttu eteni oikeuteen, jossa Spectoria syytettiin murhasta. Syylliseksi tuomittuna hän olisi joutunut elinkautiseen vankeuteen, josta olisi ollut mahdollista anoa ehdonalaiseen vapauteen pääsyä 15 vuoden jälkeen. Oikeudenkäynti kuitenkin raukesi (engl. mistrial) ja Spector vapautettiin syytteistä 26. syyskuuta 2007, koska valamiehistö ei päässyt yksimielisyyteen syyllisyydestä (kymmenen valamiestä olisi tuominnut, kaksi piti syyttömänä - valamiesten on kyettävä julistamaan yksimielinen tuomio). Spectoria vastaan ei ollut kiistattomia todisteita muutenkaan, esimerkiksi aseesta ei löytynyt hänen sormenjälkiään.

Toisen oikeudenkäynnin päätteeksi 13. huhtikuuta 2009 kalifornialainen tuomioistuin langetti Spectorille tuomion toisen asteen murhasta (engl. second degree murder). Tuomion mukaan Spector ampui näyttelijä Lana Clarksonin helmikuussa 2003. Tuomio julistettiin 29. toukokuuta 2009. Tuomio on elinkautinen, josta on mahdollisuus vapautua ehdonalaiseen aikaisintaan 19 vuoden kuluttua.
