Sonic Youth 2011

Sonic Youth oli vuonna 1981 perustettu yhdysvaltalainen vaihtoehtorock-yhtye. Yhtyeen jäsenten innoittajia ovat muun muassa Glenn Branca, Velvet Underground, The Stooges, MC5 ja Patti Smith. Yhtye käytti alkuvuosinaan paljon efektejä ja epäsovinnaisesti viritettyjä ja preparoituja kitaroita musiikissaan.

Toiminta

Bändin jäsenet toimivat aktiivisesti myös bändin ulkopuolella. Thurston Moore ja Lee Ranaldo ovat julkaisseet runokirjoja, Kim Gordon on pitänyt taidenäyttelyitä ja Steve Shelley pyörittää omaa levymerkkiä. Mark Ibold on ennen Sonic Youthia vaikuttanut Pavementissa. Jäsenillä on myös lukuisia sivuprojekteja, kuten Free Kitten, Two Dollar Guitar ja Dream/Aktion Unit.

Vuonna 2011 Lee Ranaldo ilmoitti yhtyeen ”lopettavan hetkeksi” Gordonin ja Mooren avioeron myötä.
