Hän lauloi skata soittavassa naistriossa The Soulettesissa 1960-luvulla. Rita meni naimisiin Bob Marleyn kanssa 1966 ja liittyi Bobin taustalaulajiin, I Threesiin.
Tammikuussa 2005 hän esitti toivomuksensa Bob Marleyn jäänteiden siirtämisestä Etiopiaan. Asia aiheutti suurta kiistelyä, ja päätettiin, ettei Bob Marleyn hautaa avata.
