H. E. Bates (Herbert Ernest Bates, 16. toukokuuta 1905 Rushden, Northamptonshire, Englanti – 29. tammikuuta 1974 Canterbury, Kent, Englanti)[1] oli englantilainen kirjailija. Hänen tunnetuimmat teoksensa ovat Oi ihana toukokuu, sen jatko-osat Larkinit Ranskassa ja Jälleen kotona, joista on myös tuotettu televisiosarja. Teokset on julkaistu kokoomateoksena Oi ihana toukokuu.[2][3]

Batesin vanhemmat olivat Albert Bates (1879–1949) ja Lucy Elizabeth Bates, o.s. Lucas (1879–?). Batesilla oli neljä lasta.lähde?
