Frithjof Schuon

Frithjof Schuon, 1980.

Frithjof Schuon (18. kesäkuuta, 1907 – 5. toukokuuta 1998) oli saksalaistaustainen sveitsiläinen metafyysikko, yksi traditionalistisen koulukunnan, ja samalla perenniaalisen filosofian vaikuttajista. Hän kirjoitti yli kaksikymmentä teosta metafysiikasta, hengellisyydestä, uskonnosta, antropologiasta ja taiteesta. Schuon oli lisäksi runoilija ja maalaaja.

Muiden perenniaalisten ajattelijoiden tapaan, Schuon uskoi, kirjailija William Stoddartin sanoin, että "Jumalallinen Totuus on yksi, ajaton ja universaali, ja että eri uskonnot ovat kuin eri kieliä, jotka ilmaisevat tätä samaa Totuutta." Schuon toi esiin että muun muassa Platon, Plotinos, Adi Shankara, Mestari Eckhart ja Ibn Arabi ovat käsitelleet tätä "ikiaikaista viisautta".

Vaikka Schuon ei kieltänyt kristinuskoa, ja muun muassa piti Neitsyt Mariaa suuressa arvossa, hän koki, ettei kyseinen usko tarjonnut enää mahdollisuutta seurata "esoteerista polkua" hengellisen johtajan opastuksella. Kyseisen polun seuraaminen onnistui hänelle islamin mystisen suuntauksen, suufilaisuuden kautta. Ahmad al-Alawin vihittyä hänet Shādhilī -veljeskuntaan, Schuon perusti Maryamiyya -nimisen oppilaitoksen (Tarīqa). Schuonille suufilaisuus oli "islamin luuydin".

Schuonin metafysiikka pohjautui paljolti Advaita Vedantan viittaamaan Atmaniin ja Mayaan. Schuonin "puhtaan metafysiikan" voi kiteyttää seuraavalla vedantisella lauseella; "Brahman on todellinen, maailma on illuusio, yksilön sielu ei eroa Brahmanista".

Schuon loi läheisiä ystävyyssuhteita monien eri uskonnollisten vaikuttajien kanssa. Hänellä oli erityinen kiinnostus tasankointiaanien perinteitä kohtaan ja oli vahvassa kontaktissa kansan jäsenten johtajien kanssa, ja lopulta päätyi Lakota -ja varisintiaani -heimojen jäseneksi.

Kirjoitus- ja maalaustöidensä lisäksi, Schuon toimi tekstiilisuunnittelijana.

Schuon matkusti paljon ja vietti ison osan elämästään Sveitsissä ja Ranskassa. Lopulta, 73-vuotiaana, hän asettui Yhdysvaltoihin.
