Madman Across the Water on Elton Johnin neljäs studioalbumi. Se julkaistiin vuonna 1971. Bernie Taupinin sanoitukset kuvailivat edellisten albumien tavoin Yhdysvaltoja, mutta tällä kertaa omien kokemusten pohjalta. "Tiny Dancer" kertoo hänen silloisesta vaimostaan, losangelilaisesta Maxinesta, ja "Holiday Inn" heidän matkakokemuksistaan.[1] Albumi nousi sijalle kahdeksan Yhdysvalloissa ja sijalle 41 Britanniassa. Kuten monien aikaisempien albumien kohdalla, kannen suunnitteli jälleen David Larkham.
Kansilehtinen tuotettiin aikaisempaa vaativammalla tekniikalla kalliille paperille ja sisälle pistettiin laulujen sanoitukset kokonaisuudessa, mikä aiheutti kiistoja levy-yhtiön sisällä.[2]
