Elton John on Elton Johnin toinen studioalbumi ja hänen varsinainen läpimurtoalbuminsa. Ensimmäinen single "Border Song" ei menestynyt musiikkimarkkinoilla, mutta albumi sai suurimmalta osalta hyvät arvostelut ja myi suhteessa hyvin.[1] Sen tekemiseen oli budjetoitu 6000 puntaa, mutta rahaa kului lopulta 10 000 puntaa.[2] Seuraava single oli "Take Me To the Pilot", jonka B-puoli "Your Song" nousi kymmenen kärkeen sekä Britanniassa että Yhdysvalloissa.
