Sherlock Holmesin seikkailut I–II on Arthur Conan Doylen kirjoittama Sherlock Holmes -novellien kokoelma. Kokoelman alkuteoksina ovat kolme ensimmäistä Sherlock Holmes -novellikokoelmaa: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes ja The Return of Sherlock Holmes. WSOY julkaisi sen 1957 kahtena niteenä. Novellit on suomentanut O. E. Juurikorpi (1957 ilmestynyt suomennos oli uudistettu). Myöhemmät painokset ilmestyivät yhtenä niteenä.
Novellien taustaa[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]
Doyle kirjoitti ensimmäisen Sherlock Holmes -novellin 1891 ja tarjosi sitä vastaperustetulle Strand Magazinelle. Päätoimittaja piti siitä ja tilasi 6 novellin sarjan. Ne olivat niin suosittuja, että Strand tilasi toisen 6 novellin sarjan. Pian viimeisen novellin ilmestymisen jälkeen Ne ilmestyivät The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes -novellikokoelma 1892.[1]
Sherlock Holmesin suosio oli kasvanut entisestään ja Strand tilasi 12 uutta novellia, jotka ilmestymisensä jälkeen koottiin heti The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes -kokoelmaksi 1894. Tässä vaiheessa Doyle oli jo alkanut kyllästyä Holmesin hahmoon, sillä ne veivät hänen aikaansa 'vakavalta' kirjoittamiselta ja hän halusi paneutua historiallisten romaanien kirjoittamiseen. Niinpä tämän tusinan viimeisessä novellissa Viimeinen tapaus Doyle antaa Sherlock Holmesin kuolla. Lukeva yleisö oli tyrmistynyt: Britanniassa vallitsi melkeinpä maansuru ja Doyle sai lukuisia uhkauskirjeitä. [1]
Doyle pysyi päätöksessään ja Holmes pysyi kuolleena. Holmes palasi 1901 romaanissa Baskervillen koira, mutta tapaus sijoittui aikaan ennen Viimeistä tapausta. 1903 Doylelle tarjottiin 45 000 dollaria, jotta hän kirjoittaisi 13 uutta Holmes-novellia. Tarjous oli niin huima, ettei Doyle voinut siitä kieltäytyä. Ensimmäisessä novellissa Autio talo Doyle paljasti, että Holmes oli lavastanut kuolemansa, koska halusi paeta Moriartyn kätyreitä.[1]

Novelli Keltainen pahvirasia (The Adventure of the Cardboard Box) ilmestyi tammikuussa 1893. Se ei kuitenkaan ollut mukana The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes -novellikokoelman ensimmäisessä painoksessa Britanniassa, mutta se lisättiin myöhempiin painoksiin. Sen sijaan se oli mukana ensimmäisessä yhdysvaltalaisessa painoksesta mutta poistettiin myöhemmistä. Suomessa (ja Yhdysvalloissa) se ilmestyi novellikokoelmassa Viimeinen tervehdys (His Last Bow).
Suomennosten historiaa[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]
Novellikokoelma ilmestyi 1957 kahdessa osassa (Sherlock Holmesin seikkailut osa 1 ja Sherlock Holmesin seikkailut osa 2). 1. osan viimeinen novelli oli ”Reigaten murhaajat” ja 2. osan ensimmäinen ”Kyttyräselkäinen mies”. 1983 ne ilmestyivät yhtenä niteenä nimellä Sherlock Holmesin seikkailut I-II. Sen 7. painos ilmestyi 2000.[2]
Juurikorven suomennoksia (nimellä O. E. J.) oli alun perin ilmestynyt seuraavissa kokoelmissa[3]:
