The Spirit
The Spirit on Will Eisnerin kesäkuussa 1940 luoma sarjakuvahahmo, joka seikkaili sunnuntaisin sanomalehtien sarjakuvaliitteessä. Spiritin seikkailut jatkuivat vuoteen 1952.
Spiritiä on Yhdysvalloissa julkaistu moneen otteeseen sarjakuvalehtenä ja sitä pidetään yhtenä niin sanotun Golden Age -ajan sarjakuvan klassikoista. Sitä ovat piirtäneet Eisnerin lisäksi Jack Cole ja Wally Wood.

Spirit oli nuori etsivä Denny Colt, joka näytti kuolevan heti ensimmäisessä tarinassa. Hän oli kuitenkin vain kuoleman kaltaisessa tilassa, jonka oli aiheuttanut hänen perivihollisensa tohtori Cobra. Kun Colt havahtui hereille hautausmaalla (Wildwood Cemetary), hän perusti sinne tukikohtansa ja alkoi kuin henkenä (engl. spirit ’henki’) taistella rikollisuutta vastaan. Hän ei sonnustautunut mihinkään erityiseen supersankariasuun vaan käytti sinistä pukua, sormikkaita ja vain silmät peittävää naamiota. Spirit seikkaili kaupungissa nimeltä Central City.

Aluksi Spirit-tarinat olivat perinteistä seikkailusarjakuvaa, mutta vuosien myötä niihin tuli yhä enemmän yhteiskuntakriittisiä sävyjä, melodraamaa ja kuvallista kokeilua. Alkuruudussa sarjan nimi The Spirit oli usein upotettu kolmiulotteiseksi tekstiksi osaksi maisemaa. Puhekuplat, tekstaustyyli, ruutujako ja -koko muuttivat usein muotoaan tarinan vaatimusten mukaisesti ja joskus pelkästään piirtäjän inspiraatiosta.

Vuonna 2008 sai ensi-iltansa sarjakuvaan perustuva elokuva The Spirit, jonka ohjasi sarjakuvantekijänä tunnettu Frank Miller. Elokuva sai ilmestyessään pääosin negatiivisia arvioita.[2][3]
