James Deanin kuolema tapahtui auto-onnettomuudessa 30. syyskuuta 1955. James Dean oli tunnettu yhdysvaltalainen elokuvanäyttelijä.
Viimeisimmän elokuvansa Jättiläisen kuvausten loputtua James Dean keskittyi uuteen harrastukseensa autourheiluun. Perjantaina 30. syyskuuta 1955 hän lähti ajamaan 28-vuotiaan mekaanikkonsa Rolf Wütherichin kanssa avomallisella hopeanvärisellä Porsche 550 Spyder -urheiluautollaan kohti Salinasia tarkoituksenaan osallistua kaupungin lentokentällä pidettäviin kisoihin.[2] Perässä ajoivat Bill Hickman ja valokuvaaja Sanford Roth myös Deanin omistamalla Ford Country Squire -farmariautolla, joka hinasi Spyderia varten tarkoitettua traileria. Dean halusi kuitenkin ajaa itse, jotta saisi tuntumaa hiljattain ostamaansa autoon.[3][4] Perillä Rothin oli määrä tehdä kilpa-ajosta innostuneesta elokuvatähdestä kuvareportaasi. Dean oli tuolloin ehdolla Oscar-palkinnon saajaksi suorituksistaan elokuvissa Eedenistä itään ja Jättiläinen.
Nelikko lähti Los Angelesista matkaan kello 13.30, mutta kello 15.30 Bakersfieldin lähellä poliisipartio pysäytti heidät ja sakotti ylinopeudesta[5] – Dean oli ajanut 65 mailia tunnissa 55 mailin nopeusrajoitusalueella ja vetoauto oli ylittänyt 45 mailin ajoneuvokohtaisen rajoituksen. Matkalla Dean ohitteli uhkarohkeasti perjantairuuhkan vastaantulijoista välittämättä, ja Bill Hickman neuvoi häntä keventämään kaasujalkaa.
Myöhemmin jätettyään Hickmanin ajaman Fordin kauas taakseen Dean pysähtyi ja tankkasi Blackwell's Cornerissa Lost Hillsissä. Vähän ennen iltahämärää Dean saavutti Polinon harjanteen valtatiellä 466 (nykyään 46), jonka jälkeen alkoi pitkä loiva, välillä kumpuileva suora alas länteen kohti auringonlaskua. Lähestyessään Cholamen taajamaa hän ohitti vielä erään auton, jonka oli väistettävä pientareelle.[6] Kohta ohituksen jälkeen vastakkaisesta suunnasta tullut 1950-mallinen Ford Custom Tudor coupé yllättäen kääntyi vasemmalle hänen autonsa eteen tarkoituksenaan jatkaa pohjoiseen Fresnoon valtatietä 41 pitkin. Dean tuskin oli havainnut risteystä, sillä sitä ei ollut merkitty kunnolla.[7] Hän yritti välttää onnettomuuden väistämällä oikealta, mutta osui Fordin vasempaan etukulmaan. Törmäyksen voimasta Porsche lensi ulos tieltä ja pysähtyi puhelintolppaan pellon laidan piikkilanka-aidalle. Ford kiepsahti ympäri 180 astetta jääden länteen vievälle kaistalle poikittain. Deanin matkatoveri Wütherich lensi autosta tielle ja loukkaantui vakavasti, mutta selviytyi. (Myöhemmin talvella 1965 Wütherich sijoittui kartanlukija-mekaanikkona toiseksi Timo Mäkisen voittamassa Monte Carlon rallissa[8]). Dean jumittui jaloistaan romuttuneeseen Porscheensa niska murtuneena[9] pää matkustajan puolelle retkahtaneena. Hän oli kuolemassa, kun Hickman ja Roth tulivat onnettomuuspaikalle 5–10 minuuttia myöhemmin.[10] Ohikulkumatkalla ollut sairaanhoitaja Annabele Coombes havaitsi vielä heikon pulssin.[11] Myöhemmin Hickman sanoi todistaneensa Deanin päästävän viimeisen henkäyksensä.[12] Heidät vietiin ambulanssilla Paso Roblesin War Memorial Hospital -sairaalaan, jossa James Dean todettiin kuolleeksi kello 17.59.
Eteen kääntynyttä Fordia ohjannut 23-vuotias opiskelija Donald Turnupseed sai vain lieviä vammoja. Hän liftasi paikalta Tulareen, jonne oli ollut matkalla vanhempiensa luokse. Paikallinen oikeus vapautti hänet kaikesta vastuusta, koska katsoi, että elokuvatähti oli ajanut ylinopeutta. Turnupseedin elämä ei silti koskaan palannut entiselleen, sillä tapahtuneen painolasti, fanaattiset Deanin ihailijat ja jatko-oikeuskäsittelyt piinasivat häntä koko loppuelämän.
Vasta paljon myöhemmin on voitu tietokonesimuloinnilla osoittaa, että Dean ei onnettomuushetkellä ylittänyt 60 mailin tuntinopeutta.[13][14] On mahdollista, että auringonlaskun viimeiset säteet tai alkava hämärä peittivät erittäin matalan hopeanvärisen Porschen näkyvistä.[15] Toinen teoria on, että Turnupseed luuli olevansa etuajo-oikeutettu, koska Y-risteyksessä, jossa hän kääntyi valtatielle 41 kohti Fresnoa, tie jatkui lähestulkoon suoraan. Nykyään risteys on turvallisempi kuin vuonna 1955, sillä valtatietä on levennetty ja risteystä selkeytetty.
Vuonna 1977 Cholamen postitoimistoa vastapäätä pystytettiin japanilaisen liikemiehen lahjoittama muistomerkki[16], jonka muistolaatassa on lainaus Antoine de Saint-Exupéryn Pikku prinssistä: "What is essential is invisible to the eye".[17]
