The Bonnie Blue Flag

Nuottijulkaisun kansi vuodelta 1861

The Bonnie Blue Flag on yhdysvaltalainen marssilaulu, jonka laati etelävaltioiden käytettäväksi Harry McCarthy ja jonka nuotit A.E. Blackmar and Bro. julkaisi vuonna 1861. Kappale pohjautuu melodiansa puolesta irlantilaiseen kansansävelmään ”The Irish Jaunting Car”.

Kappaleen nimessä esiintyvä ”bonnie blue flag” (suom. kelpo sininen lippu) viittaa vuonna 1810 lyhyen aikaa olemassa olleeseen Länsi-Floridan tasavaltaan, jonka Yhdysvallat myöhemmin liitti itseensä. Samankaltaista lippua käytti myöhemmin jonkin aikaa myös Texasin tasavalta.

On huomioitava, että kappaleen sanat eivät vastaa Yhdysvalloista irtautuneiden osavaltioiden todellista järjestystä.

”Property” vastaan ”liberty”

Kappaleen kolmannen säkeen neljäs sana oli alkuperäisessä versiossa ”property” eli omaisuus, viitaten etelävaltioissa vallinneeseen orjuuteen. Joissakin myöhemmissä versioissa, mukaan lukien A.E. Blackmar and Bro. -yhtiön neljässä viimeisessä julkaisussa yhdeksästä, sana on muutettu muotoon ”liberty” eli vapaus. Muun muassa vuoden 2003 elokuvassa Jumalan miekka etelävaltioiden sotilaiden nähdään laulavan kappaleesta sen jälkimmäistä versioita. Tämä poiki elokuvaa koskevan valituksen, koska sen katsottiin vääristelevän historiaa ja etelävaltioiden motiiveja – kappaleessa itsessään mainitun Alexander Stephensin mukaan orjuus oli etelävaltioiden kulmakivi ja Yhdysvalloista irtautumisen nimenomainen syy.
