Language with the code "lag"

[muokkaa wikitekstiä]

Hi!

Short version of the question: What is the correct name of the Rangi language in Finnish?

Longer explanation: My name is Amir Aharoni, and among other things, I am helping people to add new languages to the Wikipedia world.

I have a somewhat surprising question. There are two languages, which are unrelated linguistically, but both of them are spoken in Africa, and they have similar names. One of them is called "Rangi" or "Langi" in English, and its ISO 639 code is "lag". The other is called "Lango" in English, and its ISO 639 code is "laj".

There are articles about them in the Finnish Wikipedia:

There are volunteers who want to start a Wikipedia in both of those languages.

The problem is that in the CLDR database, which lists names of languages in various languages, the Finnish name of the "Rangi/Langi" language is listed as "Lango". This creates ambiguity because Wikipedia uses the CLDR database for searching for language names, and the presence of the name "Lango" in Finnish causes it to find the Rangi/Langi language (lag) instead of the actual Lango language (laj).

The easiest solution to this problem would be to change the Finnish name of this language from "Lango" to "Langi". I suspect that this name is mistaken in the first place because the name of this language in almost all the languages that are written in the Latin alphabet is "Langi" or "Rangi", or something very close to it. You can see the whole list on the page Languages K–N on the CLDR site. Other than Finnish (fi), the only exceptions are Inari Sami (smn) and Kölsch (ksh) and I'm asking people who know these languages the same question that I'm asking you.

And perhaps the Finish Wikipedia article Lango (bantukieli) should also be renamed to "Langi". (And then you won't need disambiguation on Lango and Lango (niloottinen kieli).)

So what do you think? If you think that it's OK to change the Finnish name of this language in, I will do it. Of course, if there is a grammatical reason to call it "Lango" in Finnish, it's perfectly fine.

Thank you! Amir E. Aharooni (keskustelu) 4. lokakuuta 2024 kello 16.14 (EEST)Vastaa

I can't find any other online Finnish website to list language names in Finnish than kotoistus.fi. Unfortunately it only lists lag and says for the Langi the Finnish name is lango. The page is updated this year. Stryn (keskustelu) 4. lokakuuta 2024 kello 17.17 (EEST)Vastaa
Thanks, I'll contact them! --Amir E. Aharooni (keskustelu) 4. lokakuuta 2024 kello 17.43 (EEST)Vastaa
Hi Amire80. Kotoistus.fi is coordinated by the Finnish National Library, and it is often used as a source for language names (inside and outside Wikipedia). Great if you can contact them. Note that Inari Sami (smn) is spoken natively only in Finland, so it is likely the Inari Sami name for lag on CLDR is derived from Finnish. FYI: Yupik. Winnie van Weerdenburg

[muokkaa wikitekstiä]

The picture shown on Winnie van Weerdenburg is not her, but it is Corrie Winkel. Van Weerdenbug is shown on File:W. Weerdenburg, E. Terpstra, T. Beumer 1964.jpg on the left. Can someone replace the picture and the text describing the picture? Thank you very much! Wimmel (keskustelu) 6. lokakuuta 2024 kello 13.28 (EEST)Vastaa

Thank you for notification, I replaced the picture. -- Zache (keskustelu) 6. lokakuuta 2024 kello 13.43 (EEST)Vastaa

Thank you for your change, meanwhile an editor of the Polish wikipedia has also created a cut-out showing only her: File:Winnie van Weerdenburg in 1964.jpg. --Wimmel (keskustelu) 6. lokakuuta 2024 kello 15.03 (EEST)Vastaa

Eeva Kilpi's Perhonen ylittää tien

[muokkaa wikitekstiä]

Hello, I'm looking for a specific song on Eeva's poetry book "Perhonen ylittää tien", I have only its Hebrew translation, therefore I can't direct you to which specific song I'm looking for. It's a very short song, about 7 lines which goes on like that (trans from heb to Eng.):

Tell me right away if I'm disturbing

he said as we entered through the door

And I'm leaving right away

You are not just a nuisance

I answered him

You shake my whole existence

Wellcome

As well, if the translation is unclear, perhaps can you direct me to where can I find the book online/PDF? Lilijuros (keskustelu) 15. tammikuuta 2025 kello 12.18 (EET)Vastaa
@Lilijuros Is the song what you are seeking Ellinoora's Taideteos (Youtube video)? Here is also original text of the poem. --Zache (keskustelu) 13. huhtikuuta 2025 kello 18.47 (EEST)Vastaa

Edit confirmed (or similar)

[muokkaa wikitekstiä]

Hello, what is the procedure for getting autoconfirmed on Fi.Wikipedia? I notice my edits on here still have to be approved by someone else and the same procedure applies for newer users on other Wikipedias to deter vandals. But with over 64,000 edits over a 20-year period on En.Wikipedia and 15 years of the occasional edit here to update names and information, I'm obviously not a vandal, so I just wonder what the threshold is? Valenciano (keskustelu) 13. huhtikuuta 2025 kello 13.15 (EEST)Vastaa

@Valenciano: The threshold for getting autoconfirmed is that your account needs to be at least 4 days (96 hours) old, but autoconfirmed status does not exempt you from your edits needing to be approved by someone else. Instead, we have the equivalent of autochecked users, which is a status granted by admins by request, or by their own initiative. I'll go ahead and grant you the status, as it's clear the minor updates you do here don't need to be checked by others. --Lentokonefani asiaa? | syntilista 13. huhtikuuta 2025 kello 13.42 (EEST)Vastaa

Searching collaborators to improve the IBM System/23 Datamaster article

[muokkaa wikitekstiä]

I do know about this machine and where to find resources to significantly improve the article, but don't know Suomi. For this reason I would like to ask collaboration with someone who has knowledge of computers, especially old ones, to help me improve it. Thank you in advance!
