Billy the Kid on yhdysvaltalainen musiikkikappale. Laulun on säveltänyt ja sanoittanut pastori ja lauluntekijä Andrew Jenkins yhdessä tytärpuolensa Irene Spainin kanssa.

Balladeja, joiden väitetään kertovan Billy the Kidistä, on olemassa muutamia. Tutkija D. K. Wilgusin (1918–1989) mukaan Jenkinsin ja Spainin sävellystyö on ainoa, jolla näyttää olevan todellinen traditionaalinen merkittävyys. Muut toisinnot eli variantit ovat myöhäisempiä.

Laulun teksti kertoo Billy the Kidin elämäkerran Walter Noble Burnsin kirjan, The Saga of Billy the Kid (1926), pohjalta. Jenkins kertoi, että ”laulu kertoo Billie the Kidin todellisesta elämästä niin kuin sanomalehdistä ja muusta painetusta aineistosta on luettavissa ja tutkittavissa.”

Jenkins sai toimeksiannon atlantalaiselta Polk Brockmanilta, joka oli levy-yhtiöiden kykyjenetsijä ja itsenäinen yrittäjä. Brockman ehdotti Jenkinsille, että tämä säveltäisi kaupallisen sävelmän Burnsin kertomuksen pohjalta. Laulun sanat perustuvat suoraan Burnsin kirjaan. Jenkins lähetti sävellyksen Brockmanille noin helmikuussa 1927.

Laulun levytti Marion Try Slaughter, taiteilijanimellä Vernon Dalhart, 15. helmikuuta 1927 Brunswick Recordsille ja myöhemmin samana vuonna kolmelle muulle levy-yhtiölle: Okeh Records, Columbia Records (nimellä Al Craver) ja Victor Recording Company. Hänen jälkeensä sitä ovat tulkinneet ainakin The Willis Brothers, Ry Cooder, Woody Guthrie, Burl Ives, Tex Ritter ja Marty Robbins.

Jenkins ja Spain myivät sävellyksen Polk Brockmanille luultavasti 25 dollarin ”käypään hintaan”. He menettivät laulun taloudelliset oikeudet. D. K. Wilgusin mukaan se on kuitenkin tekijänoikeudella suojattu Andrew Jenkinsin nimellä 18. maaliskuuta 1954 lähtien. Sävellys on otettu mukaan musiikkitieteilijä John A. Lomaxin ja hänen poikansa Alan Lomaxin teokseen American Ballads and Folk Songs (1934).

1. I'll sing you a true song of Billy the Kid, I'll sing of the desperate deeds that he did; Way out in New Mexico, long long ago When a man's only chance was an old forty-four. 2. When Billie the Kid was a very young lad Out in Silver City he went to the bad; Way out in the West with a gun in his hand– Altho but twelve years old, he killed his first man. 3. Fair Mexican Maidens play guitars and sing A song about Billie their boy-bandit king; How ere his young manhood had reached its sad end Had a notch on his pistol for twenty-one men. 4. On the very same night when poor Billie had died– He said to his friends, I am not satisfied There were twenty-one men I have put bullets through And Sheriff Pat Garrett must make twenty-two.

5. Now this is how Billie the Kid met his fate, The bright moon was shining, the hour was late– Shot down by Pat Garrett, who once was his friend The young outlaw's life had now come to its end. 6. Down in Pecos Valley all covered with green Out in "Hell's Half-acre" three graves can be seen; Where Tommie and Charlie and Billie now lie, Their trail of blood ended, they all had to die. 7. There's many a young man with face fine and fair Who starts out in life with a chance to be square; But just like poor Billie he wanders astray And loses his life in the very same way. Rev.
