  • District Judge Caruthers convened a grand jury in June 1911 to investigate the lynching of the Laura Nelson and her son. In his instructions to the jury, he said,
"The people of the state have said by recently adopted constitutional provision that the race to which the unfortunate victims belonged should in large measure be divorced from participation in our political contests, because of their known racial inferiority and their dependent credulity, which very characteristic made them the mere tool of the designing and cunning. It is well known that I heartily concur in this constitutional provision of the people's will. The more then does the duty devolve upon us of a superior race and of greater intelligence to protect this weaker race from unjustifiable and lawless attacks."
Laura Nelson was hanged along with her son for the murder of a white deputy sheriff. Both mother and son insisted to the sheriff that they shot the deputy. It was later determined that it was the son who did the shooting. The deputy went to the Nelson house to recover stolen meat. When the deputy attempted to arrested the woman, evidently the son appeared with a gun and shot him. The allegation of rape and/or murder was the impetus for the vast majority of white-on-black lynchings between 1882 to 1960

Tämä ennen vuotta 1929 julkaistu yhdysvaltalainen teos on ilman tekijänoikeuden suojaa Yhdysvalloissa. Ennen vuotta 1998 tekijänoikeuden suoja-aika oli ennen vuotta 1978 julkaistuille muodollisuudet (tekijänoikeushuomautus, ennen vuotta 1964 myös tekijänoikeuden uusiminen) täyttäneille teoksille 75 vuotta julkaisuvuodesta. Vuoden 1998 alussa näiden teosten suoja-aika pidennettiin 95 vuoteen julkaisuvuodesta. Ne teokset, jotka olivat ilman tekijänoikeuden suojaa vuoden 1998 alussa, eivät saaneet tekijänoikeuttaan takaisin, ja siten kaikki ennen vuotta 1929 julkaistut yhdysvaltalaiset teokset ovat ilman tekijänoikeuden suojaa.
