William James ”Willem” Dafoe (s. 22. heinäkuuta 1955 Appleton, Wisconsin) on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä.
Elokuvanäyttelijän uransa 1980-luvun alussa aloittanut Dafoe on esittänyt urallaan monenlaisia rooleja kaupallisista rooleista luonnerooleihin.[1] Hän on ollut neljä kertaa Oscar-ehdokkaana ja kolme kertaa Golden Globe -ehdokkaana.
Nuoruus
[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]Dafoe syntyi Wisconsinissa vuonna 1955. Hänellä on kuusi vanhempaa sisarusta ja yksi nuorempi sisarus. Hänen isänsä oli kirurgi, ja hänen äitinsä työskenteli isän vastaanotolla. Dafoe otti käyttöön Willem-kutsumanimen teini-ikäisenä, ja käytti nimeä myös näyttelijänuransa alusta alkaen.[2]
Dafoe näytteli kesäteatterissa 11-vuotiaana. Valmistuttuaan high schoolista hän harkitsi uraa armeijassa, mutta jatkoikin opintojaan Wisconsin–Milwaukeen yliopistossa. Hän kävi myös teatterikursseilla ja näytteli koulunsa teatterituotannoissa.[2]
Dafoe keskeytti opintonsa vuonna 1974 ryhtyäkseen näyttelijäksi. Hän esiintyi kokeellisessa Theater X -teatteriryhmässä vuoteen 1976 asti, kunnes muutti New Yorkiin ja liittyi siellä Wooster Group -ryhmään.[2]
Elokuvaura
[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]Dafoen ensimmäinen elokuvarooli oli avustajana vuoden 1980 lännenelokuvassa Portti ikuisuuteen. Seuraavana vuonna hän sai isomman roolin elokuvassa Tunteettomat. Sitä seurasi joukko sivuosia vuoteen 1986 saakka, jolloin Dafoe esiintyi läpimurtoroolissaan kersantti Eliasina Oliver Stonen sotaelokuvassa Platoon – nuoret sotilaat.[2]
Vuonna 1988 Dafoe esiintyi kohuroolissa Jeesuksena Martin Scorsesen elokuvassa Kristuksen viimeinen kiusaus. Sitä seurasi sarja erityyppisiä elokuvia, kuten sota-aiheinen Syntynyt 4. heinäkuuta (1989), eroottinen trilleri Body of Evidence – Hyytävä syleily (1993), draama Englantilainen potilas (1996), rikoselokuva Boondock Saints – Etelä-Bostonin enkelit (1999), jännityselokuva Amerikan Psyko (2000) ja kauhumysteerielokuva Shadow of the Vampire (2000).[2]
Supersankarielokuvassa Spider-Man – hämähäkkimies (2002) Dafoe esitti kaksoisroolia konnana ja tämän alter egona, Vihreänä Menninkäisenä. Elokuvasta tuli suurmenestys, ja osittain maskin takaa näytellyt Dafoe sai kiitosta roolisuorituksestaan. Dafoe esitti samaa hahmoa myös Hämähäkkimiehen kolmessa jatko-osassa vuosina 2004, 2007 ja 2021.[2]
Dafoe jatkoi yhteistyötä Martin Scorsesen kanssa sivuosalla elämäkertaelokuvassa Lentäjä (2004). Hän on näytellyt ja ääninäytellyt 2000-luvulla myös useissa Wes Andersonin ja Lars von Trierin elokuvissa. Dafoen elokuvia 2010-luvulla ovat myös esimerkiksi The Florida Project (2017), Van Gogh – ikuisuuden porteilla (2018), jossa hän esittää pääosassa taiteilija Vincent van Goghia, sekä The Lighthouse (2019).[2]
Dafoe on näytellyt useissa elokuvissa vuosittain myös 2020-luvulla, ja esimerkiksi vuonna 2023 hän esiintyi seitsemässä elokuvassa. Vuonna 2024 hän näytteli vampyyrielokuva Nosferatussa.[2]
Dafoe on ollut ehdolla parhaan miessivuosan Oscar-palkintoon elokuvista Platoon – nuoret sotilaat (1986), Shadow of the Vampire (2000) ja The Florida Project (2017), sekä parhaan miespääosan Oscar-palkintoon elokuvasta Van Gogh – ikuisuuden porteilla (2018).[2]
Yksityiselämä
[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]Dafoella on suhteestaan ohjaaja Elizabeth LeCompten kanssa yksi poika, Jack (s. 1982).[3] Dafoe meni naimisiin italialaisen näyttelijän Giada Colagranden kanssa vuonna 2005.[3]
Dafoella on sekä Yhdysvaltain että Italian kansalaisuus.[4]
