Wayne Shorter

Wayne Shorter (25. elokuuta 1933) on yhdysvaltalainen jazz-saksofonisti ja säveltäjä. Valmistuttuaan vuonna 1956 New Yorkin yliopistosta ja oltuaan kaksi vuotta armeijassa Shorter liittyi Maynard Fergusonin orkesteriin. Siinä soitti myös Joe Zawinul, jonka kanssa Shorter myöhemmin perusti Weather Report -fuusiojazzyhtyeen. Samoihin aikoihin hän ystävystyi John Coltranen kanssa.

Syksyllä 1959 Shorter liitty Art Blakeyn Jazz Messengers -kokoonpanoon yhdessä Lee Morganin kanssa. Hänestä tuli myös yhtyeen taiteellinen johtaja.

Vuonna 1964 Shorter liittyi Miles Davisin kvintettiin. Davisin, Shorterin, Herbie Hancockin, Ron Carterin ja Tony Williamsin muodostama yhtye oli 60-luvun merkittävimpiä jazz-kokoonpanoja.

Weather Report -yhtyeen Shorter perusti vuonna 1970 yhdessä Zawinulin kanssa ja samalla tyylisuunta muuttui fuusiojazziin.

Shorterin omista levytyksistä kannattaa mainita Vee Jay -levymerkille tehdyt Second Genesis, Blues A La Carte ja Wayning Moments. Lisäksi hän on levyttänyt Blue Note -levymerkille mm. albumit Night Dreamer, Juju, Speak No Evil, Adam's Apple ja Schizophrenia.

Shorter on yhä aktiivinen muusikko ja hän konsertoi nykyään uuden kvartettinsa kanssa, jossa soittavat rumpali Brian Blade, pianisti Danilo Perez ja basisti John Patitucci.

Shorter vieraili viimeksi kesällä 2003 Porin jazzfestivaaleilla.
