English: In the 6th century B.C. one of ancient Athens’ three Gymnasia (training grounds) was built in this area, while nearly two centuries later, in 388 B.C., Plato founded his philosophical school. The building unearthed here is considered to be the central part of the Gymnasium, which includes the Palaestra (wrestling school). It was, therefore, an establishment for training and teaching. It dates however to a considerably later period (1st century B.C. – 1st century A.D.). A large rectangular courtyard, surrounded by long and narrow indoor spaces, is preserved. A row of foundations supported – according to a suggestion – tables for the students. At the edge of the court, a cistern provided for the athlete’s bathing requirements. To the east, west, and south of this edifice remains of buildings of the Roman period have been found which are also identified with part of the Gymnasium of this era.
