Peter Gay

Peter Gay (20. kesäkuuta 1923 Berliini – 12. toukokuuta 2015 New York) oli yhdysvaltalainen historioitsija, joka tunnetaan erityisesti laajasta Freud-elämäkerrasta.

Juutalainen Gay syntyi Berliinissä nimenään Peter Joachim Fröhlich, mutta hänen perheensä otti käyttöön englanninkielisen sukunimen paettuaan Yhdysvaltoihin toisen maailmansodan alussa. Hän oli Yhdysvaltain kansalainen vuodesta 1946.

Gay valmistui Denverin ja Columbian yliopistosta. Hän toimi Columbian valtio-opin professorina vuosina 1948–1955 ja historian professorina vuosina 1955–1969. Sen jälkeen hän opetti Yalessa, kunnes jäi eläkkeelle vuonna 1993. Hän oli vuodesta 1959 naimisissa taidehistorioitsija Ruth Slotkinin (k. 2006) kanssa.

Gay oli Yhdysvaltain taide- ja kirjallisuusakatemian jäsen vuodesta 1989, ja hänelle myönnettiin vuonna 1996 akatemian kultamitali historian alalta.
