James Leyland Kirby (s. 9. toukokuuta 1974) on brittiläinen ambient-muusikko, joka tunnetaan myös taiteilijanimellä The Caretaker. Hänen työlleen on ominaista muistin ja sen asteittaisen rappeutumisen, nostalgian ja melankolian tutkiminen. Projekti sai alun perin inspiraationsa vuoden 1980 elokuvan Hohto kummitussalikohtauksesta, vuoden 1978 TV-ohjelmasta Pennejä taivaasta ja vuoden 1962 elokuvasta Carnival of Souls.[1] Hänen albuminsa sisältävät käsiteltyjä ja manipuloituja näytteitä 1930-luvun ballroom musiikista.[2] Suurimman osan hänen levynkansistaan maalaa hänen ystävänsä, Ivan Seal.
Kriitikot ovat ylistäneet The Caretakerin teoksia julkaisuissa kuten The New York Times,[3] ja BBC Music.[4]
