Edward Walter Maunder

Edward Walter Maunder (12. huhtikuuta 1851 Lontoo – 21. maaliskuuta 1928) oli englantilainen tähtitieteilijä, joka muistetaan tekemistään auringonpilkkututkimuksistaan.

Perhetausta ja opinnot

Maunder syntyi kuopukseksi pastorin perheeseen Lontoossa 1851. Hän opiskeli Lontoon King’s Collegessa, mutta ei koskaan valmistunut. Opiskelujensa aikana hän työskenteli pankissa rahoittaakseen opintonsa.

Työura

Vuonna 1873 Maunder alkoi työskennellä apulaisena Greenwichin kuninkaallisessa observatoriossa. Hänen mukaansa on nimetty Maunderin minimi, vuosina 1645–1715 vallinnut kausi, jolloin auringonpilkut olivat hyvin harvinaisia.
