Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean (suom. Columbia, valtameren jalokivi), myös nimellä The Red, White, and Blue (suom. punainen, valkoinen ja sininen)[1], on yhdysvaltalainen isänmaallinen musiikkikappale. Se julkaistiin ensimmäistä kertaa vuonna 1843 Philadelphiassa Yhdysvalloissa. Eräät ensimmäisistä julkaisuista (1843 ja 1846) tapahtuivat nimellä ”Columbia, the Land of the Brave” (suom.

Shaw pyysi noin vuonna 1843 a’Beckettiä säveltämään laatimansa tekstin pohjalta musiikkikappaleen. Brittiläisen Meanyn tulkintaa vuonna 1852 julkaistua nimeltä ”Britannia, the Pride of the Ocean” puolestaan on toisinaan väitetty alkuperäiseksi versioksi kappaleesta.[2][3][4]

Columbia, the gem of the ocean,
The home of the brave and the free
The shrine of each patriot’s devotion,
A world offers homage to thee.

Thy mandates make heroes assemble,
when liberty’s form stands in view
Thy banners make tyranny tremble,
When borne by the red, white, and blue!

When borne by the red, white, and blue!
When borne by the red, white, and blue!
Thy banners make tyranny tremble,
When borne by the red, white, and blue!

When war winged it’s wide desolations,
and threatened the land to deform
The ark then of freedom’s foundation,
Columbia, rode safe through the storm

With the garlands of vict’ry about her,
when so proudly she bore her brave crew
With her flag proudly floating before her,
the boast of the red, white, and blue!

The boast of the red, white, and blue!
The boast of the red, white, and blue!
With her flag proudly floating before her,
the boast of the red, white, and blue!

Merkitys[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]

Yhdysvaltain sisällissodan aikana ”Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean” nautti suurta suosiota, sillä se ylisti kansallista yhtenäisyyttä. Sodan jälkeen siitä tuli sotilassoittokuntien, kuten John Philip Sousan johtaman Yhdysvaltain merijalkaväen soittokunnan, repertuaarien yleinen osa.[2][3][5] Se julkaistiin tallenteena ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 1905.[2]

Muusikko Charles Ives siteerasi kappaletta useasti vuonna 1943 nauhoittamassaan kappaleessa ”They Are There!”[1] Hän siteerasi sitä myös ainakin kuudessatoista muussa sävellyksessään.[5]
