The Beat

The Beat (Yhdysvalloissa tunnetaan nimellä The English Beat) on englantilainen Birminghamissa vuonna 1978 perustettu yhtye, joka yhdistelee musiikissaan skata, poppia, soulia, reggaeta ja punkrokkia. Jamaikalainen saksofonisti Saxa (oik. Lionel Martin s. 1930, aka "Papa Saxa") lisäsi perinteiseen rock-kokoonpanoon jamaikalaisen ska-musiikin soundin.

1980-luvun alussa The Beat julkaisi kolme albumia, joista I Just Can't Stop It (1980) ja Wha'ppen (1981) nousivat brittilistan kolmosiksi. Yhtyeellä oli viisi Top10-singleä Britannian listalla vuosina 1982–1983.

Yhdysvalloissa toimi 1970-luvulla myös The Beat -yhtye, tämän vuoksi Pohjois-Amerikassa yhtye käytti nimeä The English Beat. Yhdysvaltalainen yhtye käytti myöhemmin itsestään nimeä Paul Collins’ Beat.

Hajoamisen jälkeen

Yhtye hajosi vuonna 1983. Dave Wakeling (kitara, laulu) ja Ranking Roger perustivat General Public -yhtyeen, Andy Cox (kitara) ja David Steele (basso) Fine Young Cannibalsin yhdessä laulaja Roland Giftin kanssa. Vuonna 2003 alkuperäiskokoonpano (pois lukien Cox ja Steele) yhdessä Ranking Rogerin pojan Juniorin kanssa palasivat yhteen yhden loppuunmyydyn Royal Festival Hall -konsertin ajaksi. VH1:n ohjelma Bands Reunited yritti saada alkuperäiskokoonpanoa yhteen vuonna 2004 siinä onnistumatta.

Nykyisin yhtye esiintyy The Beatina Englannissa (kokoonpanolla Ranking Roger, Everett Moreton ja Mickey Billingham [ex-Dexys Midnight Runners, korvasi yhtyeessä Blockhead Daven]) ja The English Beatina Yhdysvalloissa (Wakeling, Wayne Lothian [ex-General Public ja Special Beat], Rick Torres [ex-Supreme Beings of Leisure], Rhythmm Epkins, Fernando Jativa ja Paul Welch)
