NHL-kausi 1977–1978 oli National Hockey Leaguen historian 61. kausi. Sen aikana 18 NHL-joukkuetta pelasi kukin 80 runkosarjaottelua.[1] Stanley Cupin voitti Scotty Bowmanin valmentama Montreal Canadiens,[2] joka kukisti finaalisarjassa Boston Bruinsin otteluvoitoin 4–2.[3] Kyseessä oli Montreal Canadiensin kolmas peräkkäinen mestaruus. Kaiken kaikkiaan se oli NHL:n olemassaolon aikana Canadiensin 20. ja seuran koko historian 21. Stanley Cup -mestaruus.[2][4]

Runkosarjan pistepörssin, maalipörssin ja plus/miinus-tilaston voitti Canadiens-hyökkääjä Guy Lafleur, joka keräsi kauden aikana kaikkiaan 132 tehopistettä pelaamissaan 78 ottelussa.[5][6] Hänen tekemiensä maalien määrä oli 60.[5] NHL-palkinnoista Lafleurille myönnettiin Art Ross Trophyn ohella Hart Memorial Trophy ja Lester B. Pearson Award.[7][8][9] Lisäksi hänet valittiin liigan ykköstähdistöön.[6] Lafleur voitti myös pudotuspelien pistepörssin. Hän teki 15 pudotuspeliottelussa yhteensä 21 tehopistettä, joista 10 oli maaleja ja 11 syöttöpisteitä.[10] Pudotuspelien arvokkaimmaksi pelaajaksi valittiin ja Conn Smythe Trophyllä palkittiin Lafleurin tavoin Canadiensia edustanut puolustaja Larry Robinson.[6][11]

Kauden päätteeksi jaettiin ensimmäisen kerran liigan parhaalle puolustavalle hyökkääjälle myönnettävä Frank J. Selke Trophy. Ensimmäisen Selke-palkinnon sai Canadiensin Bob Gainey.[12]
