Michael Wood

Michael Wood vuonna 2013.

Michael Wood (s. 23. heinäkuuta 1948) on englantilainen historioitsija ja dokumentaristi. Hän on tehnyt dokumentteja mm. konkistadoreista, Intian historiasta, Aleksanteri Suuresta ja William Shakespearesta. Englannissa hänen dokumenttejaan on esittänyt BBC, Yhdysvalloissa PBS ja Suomessa Yle.

Ura lyhyesti

Wood syntyi Manchesterissa ja kävi koulunsa Manchester Grammar Schoolissa. Historiaa hän opiskeli Oriel Collegessa, Oxfordissa ja teki loppututkintonsa anglosaksisesta historiasta. 1970-luvulla hän siirtyi toimittajaksi ja työskenteli BBC:llä ensin reportterina ja sitten avustavana tuottajana. Wood palasi historian pariin vuosina 1979-81, jolloin hän teki tv-sarjan In Search of the Dark Ages, jossa tutki keskiaikaisia johtajia, kuten esim. Vilhelm Valloittajaa. Sarjasta hän sai myös aiheen ensimmäiselle kirjalleen. Wood sai huomiota myös Yhdysvalloissa, kun PBS esitti hänen sarjojaan tiiviiseen tahtiin. Tämän jälkeen Wood on tehnyt dokumentteja ja tv-sarjoja tasaiseen tahtiin, viimeisin on vuodelta 2017.

Tunnustukset

Wood on ollut mm. Royal Historical Societyn jäsen ja vuonna 2009 Sunderlandin yliopisto myönsi Woodille kunniatohtorin arvonimen. Vuonna 2011 myös Leicterin yliopisto myönsi Woodille kunniatohtorin arvonimen.
