Tuulen viemää oli kaikkein eniten tuottanut elokuva 25 vuoden ajan, ja inflaatiokorjattuna se on tuottanut enemmän kuin mikään muu elokuva.

Elokuvat tuottavat tuloja useista eri tulolähteistä mukaan lukien teatterinäytöksistä, DVD- ja Blu-ray -myynnistä, esittämisoikeuksista televisiossa ja markkinoinnista. Elokuvateattereiden lipputulot ovat kuitenkin tärkein ja pääasiallinen mittari, kun määritellään elokuvan menestystä. Tämä johtuu vanhan käytännön lisäksi siitä, että lipputulotiedot ovat helposti saatavilla verrattuna muihin tulolähteisiin. Tämä luettelo listaa kaikkien aikojen eniten lipputuloja saaneet elokuvat ja elokuvasarjat, ja näyttää miten lipputulot ovat kasvaneet ajan myötä. Perinteisesti sotaelokuvat, musikaalit ja historialliset draamat ovat olleet kaikkein suosituimpia genrejä, mutta 2000-luvulla elokuvasarjat ovat menestyneet parhaiten. Kaksi kahdeksasta Harry Potter -elokuvasta ja kaikki Peter Jacksonin Keski-Maahan sijoittuvat elokuvat ovat viidenkymmenen menestyneimmän elokuvan joukossa, minkä lisäksi Transformers ja Pirates of the Caribbean ovat olleet suosittuja. Myös supersankarielokuvat kiinnostavat elokuvayleisöä: DC Comicsin Teräsmies ja Batman sekä Marvel Comicsin sarjakuviin perustuvat elokuvat, kuten Hämähäkkimies, X-Men ja Marvel Cinematic Universen elokuvat, ovat menestyneet pääosin hyvin.
